Writing
"Are Conspiracy Theorists True Believers, or Are They Just Acting out Fantasies?" For The Conversation
"Manipulating Imaginations to Spread Misinformation." For The Junkyard
Community Engagement
I've been involved with a couple of awesome organizations that bring philosophy to learners outside the traditional university setting: University in the Community (as a volunteer instructor) and the Ontario High School Ethics Bowl (as a judge).
Teaching
In my courses, I often give students the opportunity to design a "public philosophy project" in lieu of writing a traditional term paper. You can read about my experiences doing so at Daily Nous and Engaged Philosophy. Here are a few exciting projects from my recent Minds & Machines course (shared with creator permission):
- A philosophical video review of the film Her (2013). By Muhammad Abdurrahman.
- An illustrated essay exploring a thought experiment about equipping police with conscious, AI-controlled guns. By Kristal Menguc.
- A computer game called "DUM Academy" about robot morality. By Alice Zhang.
- A philosophical interview with artist Matt Nish-Lapidus. By Chang (Hazel) Gao (more on Nish-Lapidus' work here).
- A series of 3 songs inspired by course themes (recordings + annotated lyrics). By RJ Viray.
